It’s the time of year to start thinking about the Fairfax Frogs swim team.  We are fortunate to have, Jean, Jake, and Ben returning as assistant coaches for the Frogs.  Our new head coach is Brian DuFour.  Brian has coached for a number of years in the Montgomery County Swim League and has just finished his first season as a coach for TC Williams HS in Alexandria.  Nancy Ober and Carole Rogers will be the team reps.

We will be competing in Division 6.  The other teams in Division 6 are Brookfield, Greenbriar, Hunt Valley, Lakevale Estates, and Mount Vernon Park. The Monday night B-meet schedule will be determined soon.  Typically we have three Monday night B- meets and an IM Carnival on Monday nights.

We will have our swim team registration on May 10th from 1:00 – 3:00 at the pool.  Suit-up will be present if you need to purchase a new suit.  We will be using a new suit this year - Speedo Shooting Star in green.  Purchasing a team suit is not mandatory.

The first day of practice will be June 2nd after school. Practice times are on the Swim Team Schedule link above.

Thanks in advance to all the many parents who volunteer to make the swim team happen.   It takes many dedicated parents to run the meets and team activities.  We really appreciate all of you for helping.   As with past years, we assume that you will do the same job you did last year unless you let Nancy or Carole know otherwise.

If you are new to volunteering, and want to get involved, the NVSL University scheduled on Saturday, May 31st is a great way to take some classes to learn the duties involved in running the meets.  Some of the classes include training for stroke & turn judges, referees, table workers, chief timer, clerk of course, etc.  We are always looking for more trained officials and meet workers.  Please let me know if you are interested in attending this helpful training.

Tadpoles

The tadpole program is for young swimmers who are working toward being on the swim team. Typically our tadpoles have ranged from ages 4 to 7.  We are looking for potential frog swimmers and hope that the tadpole graduation will include swimming in one B meet during the season.  We welcome younger brothers and sisters of current frog swimmers as well as those new to the swim team experience. Our tadpole instructors are typically our 12 and older swimmers. We need a minimum of five tadpoles to offer the program.

Please be aware that the tadpole program is not designed to replace swim lessons.  All tadpoles need to be able to put their face in the water and kick, unassisted, to an instructor.  If your child cannot do this or is a brand new swimmer, please wait until next season for tadpoles and sign up for the swim lessons offered through the pool.  This will ensure that all of our young swimmers have a safe and happy swim season.

We will have our first meeting of the tadpoles on Monday, June 23rd at 9:00 a.m.  The first day the kids may or may not actually get in the water.  In the past, we have found it best to use this day for the kids to get to know the instructors.  (Please have kids wear bathing suits just in case. Thanks!) The tadpole session will last for four weeks, ending Friday July 21st.  The tadpole swim time is 9:00 – 9:30 (during the 8 & under swim practice).

The cost for the tadpole program is $65.00.  This fee is not included in your family swim team registration.  Elizabeth Hurley is the Tadpole Coordinator.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact her at (703) 281-0112.  The tadpoles registration form is the same as the regular swimmer form.  Click Here for the registration form.

The dive team is getting ready for another fun filled summer season!  We'll be competing in Division 6 with Camelot, Fairfax Station, Highland Park, Lakeview, and Walden Glen.  We'll also be showing off our new diving area by hosting the Divisional dive meet on July 27th.  Kenny McAdoo will be returning as our head coach.  Kenny's has been diving at WVU.  This will be his 6th year coaching for our team.  We will have Ethan Paster and Zach Patteson returning for their 3rd year as our assistant coaches.  This summer we'll be using TIVO to let the kids see themselves diving on "instant replay".  We'll be giving a "Spirit Award"  to the teammate who supports his or her fellow Frogs and shows the most team spirit throughout the summer.  We'll also be awarding an "Age Group Challenge" trophy to those divers who master a list of dives specific to their age group.  We'll have more details on the requirements for these awards at the beginning of the season.

We hope to have a lot of our divers returning from last season and also many who are new to the team.  We have practices every week day and our dual meets are on Tuesday evenings.  We also have a few special meets on Sunday mornings toward the end of the season.  If your child is interested in the dive team, please have them come to practice during the first several weeks and give it a try.  They do not need any previous experience - just the willingness to go off the board and the ability to swim back to the side.  Joining the dive team is a great way to learn how to use the board safely while being supervised by experienced coaches.  And it's a lot of fun.  The dive team also participates in a number of social activities with the swimmers.  In the past we've shown movies at the pool, had talent shows, gone bowling, had dessert socials....  The swim and dive teams are a great way to get involved with your community and to keep the kids busy and active during the summer.

We will be having a pre-season registration for swim and dive on May 10th.  Nancy Ober and Carole Rogers (the swim reps) and I will be at the pool from 1 - 3.  The registration form link is above.  The registration fees are:  $75 for one swimmer/diver, $125 for 2 swimmers/divers, or $165 for 3 or more swimmers/divers per family.  The fee entitles the athlete to compete with the swim team, the dive team, or both teams.  Suit Up will be at registration with this year's suit for the athletes to try on and purchase.  We will be using a new suit this year (Speedo Shooting Star in green).  It is not mandatory to wear the team suit at meets.  We will also have samples and order forms for the team shirt.  The shirts will be $15.   Nancy, Carole, and I are also looking for volunteers for various positions.  (I will need a few extra volunteers to run the Divisional dive meet concession stand this year.)  If you'd like to help out, contact one of us for information.

If you're interested in getting a jump on the summer dive season, check out the Fairfax County Park Authority "Parktakes" catalog for springboard lessons at Oak Marr and Audrey Moore Recenters (www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/parktakes.htm).  Patriot Dive at GMU also has pre-summer lessons available.  Their website is www.patriotdive.com.  Dominion Dive Club is another area club dive team (www.dominiondiveclub.com) which practices at Oak Marr Recenter.  These programs are starting soon, so please contact them.

If you know of any members who are not on our dive team e-mail list please forward this information to them.  If you have any questions, you can call me at 703-352-9023 or send email to marys@fairfaxpool.com.  I look forward to seeing a lot of you at registration.   Have your kids start s t r e t c h i n g now and I'll see you at the "new" pool.
